Chondritic meteorites matrix composition

Chondritic meteorites, characterized by their relatively unfractionated chemical compositions, and usually consisting of chondrules and some matrix, can be subdivided into classes, as follows carbonaceous chondrites—Vigarano-type (CV), Ornans-type (CO), Mighei-type (CM), Renazzo-type (CR), Karoonda-type (CK), Bencubbin-type (CB), and ALH 85085-type (CH) (see Chapter 1.05 for details) ordinary chondrites—high-iron (H), low-iron (L), and low-iron, low-metal (FF) and enstatite chondrites—high-iron (EH), low-iron (EL) R-chondrites, characterized by olivine with very high ferrous iron content. [Pg.136]

Matrix minerals are complex mixtures of silicates (especially olivine and pyroxene), oxides, sulfides, metal, phyllosilicates, and carbonates. The bulk chemical composition of matrix is broadly chondritic, and richer in volatile elements than the other chondrite components. Some chondrules have rims of adhering matrix that appear to have been accreted onto them prior to final assembly of the meteorite. Small lumps of matrix also occur in many chondrites. Presolar grains, described in Chapter 5, occur in the matrix. [Pg.164]

The Cl chondrites represent one of the most curious paradoxes of cosmochemistry. Despite their unfractionated compositions, the Cl chondrites are the most altered of all chondrites, with water contents of —19.5 wt.% (Nagy et al., 1963). Anhydrous phases (olivines and pyroxenes) represent less than 1 vol.% of these meteorites (Leshin et al., 1997). Cl chondrites are complex meteorites that consist of a dark, fine-grained matrix comprised of phyllosilicates with magnetite, sulfides, carbonates, and sulfates embedded within it (e.g., DuFresne and Anders, 1962 Nagy, 1966). They have experienced extensive breccia-tion on their asteroidal parent bodies that caused... [Pg.249]
