Bifuryl (109) undergoes a Diels-Alder reaction with 2 equiv. of the benzyne precursor 2-chloro-l,4-dimethoxybenzene (108) to yield the double cycloadduct 110 (Scheme 12.33) [64]. The latter is easily aromatized in the presence of trifluo-roacetic acid to provide binaphthyl 111.

Preparation by demethylation of 2,3 -dichloro-4,5-di-methoxybenzophenone (SM) with pyri-dinium chloride for 2 h at 180-200°. SM was obtained by reaction of m-chlorobenzoic acid with l-chloro-3,4-dimethoxybenzene in the presence of phosphorous pentoxide in methane-suUbnic acid for 30 min at 70° [1199].
