Names of varieties are applied in three different ways. Either the name of the species is given and followed by the prefix var. before the varietal name, as Chenopodium ambrosioides var. anthel-minticum-, or the varietal name may be appended to the name of the species, as Chenopodium ambrosioides anthelminticum] or the varietal name may be placed immediately after the name of the genus and the specific name dropped, as Chenopodium anthelminticum. [Pg.6]

Chenopodium abrosioides is endemic to South America, but it has been introduced to Central and North America, to Europe and to Africa. Chenopodium anthelminticum is a variety thereof, and there are a number of further varieties, differing in their contents of terpenes. The botanical classification has still to be revised. Ascaridol contains a 1,4-peroxide bridge. It is the main constituent of the volatile oil of American wormseed (Chenopodium ambrosioides var. anthelminticum, Chenopodiaceae). It has anthelmintic properties but is also toxic to mammals. Ascaridol can also be found in chemotypes of some Achillea species. [Pg.2997]
