Phosphate rock reacts with sulphuric acid as follows  

The chemical equation is an over-simplification neglecting the fact that fluorine is present. When sulphuric acid reacts with phosphate rock, the rock becomes covered with a layer of CaS04, preventing further reaction. The problem is overcome by mixing the ground rock with sulphuric acid, recycled
