Chemical Transformation through Photochemistry

The earliest study of PAH photochemistry was conducted by Falk et al. (60). A striking result in these measurements was the higher reactivity of pure PAH, compared to that for PAH adsorbed on soot. However, Tebbens et al. (61) studied the chemical transformation of benzo(a)pyrene and perylene in smoke, passing through a flow reactor. Upon irradiation, he found that 35-65% of the original content in PAH had disappeared or had been transformed. Subsequently, Thomas et al. (62) employed a similar flow system to measure the reaction of BaP on soot particles and found a 56% decrease at the exit of the chamber upon irradiation. [Pg.338]
