Safety chemical

Chemical safety is the acute toxicity of compounds which needs to be considered thoroughly in view of the increasing potency and the potentially different effects on genetically different subtypes of humans or other entities of the biosphere. [Pg.239]

The most direct manner in which chemical reactions affect our environment are fires and explosions which are the most violent examples of GPTRs. [Pg.15]

When a large quantity of organic substances, in the gas or liquid phase (hydrogen. [Pg.15]

These are fires, where the quantity of gas is limited, these are not accompanied by an explosion. The damage is only due to the heat given off. [Pg.16]

These are gas fires accompanied by an explosion, which causes mechanical damage as well as thermal damage. The nature of the explosion is different according to whether it takes place in a confined space, which is the general case of domestic gas explosions in buildings, or in an unconfined environment, when organic vapours spread in the atmosphere (UVCE = Unconfined Vapour Cloud Explosion) an example of this is the FLIXBOROUGH accident which is described below. [Pg.16]

This phenomenon occurs when an organic liquid (hydrocarbon, alcohol, ketone...) stored under its vapour pressure at the temperature conditions of the process, escapes accidentally from the apparatus and catches fire. [Pg.16]

The importance of chemical safety is illustrated by Schecter, Papke, Tung, Staskal and Birnbaum [7]. The report stated that polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardant chemicals had been found in food taken from the shelves of a supermarket in Dallas, Texas. The report also revealed that levels of contamination were higher in the US than those reported from similar studies carried out in other countries. The research goes on to suggest that a key source of contamination measured in people worldwide may result from polluted items in their individual diets. Other evidence of food contamination gave rise to the advice to eat not more than two portions of oily fish each week due to the likely presence of a mercury build-up in the flesh of such fish. [Pg.77]

More recently a report by Hites, Zhu and Hoh [8] was made about how the DP highly chlorinated flame retardant was detected and identified in ambient air, fish and sediment samples in the Great Lakes of the United States with concentrations having once reached 490 pg/cm concentration at the eastern site of Sturgeon Point, New York State. [Pg.77]

Chemical safety data sheets for individual compounds should be consulted for detailed information. Precautions for the higher aldehydes are essentially those for most other reactive organic compounds, and should include adequate ventilation in areas where high exposures are expected fire and explosion precautions and proper instmction of employees in use of respiratory, eye, and skin protection. [Pg.473]

In view of the above, aniline should be handled in areas with adequate ventilation and skin exposure should be avoided by wearing the proper safety equipment. Recommended personal protective equipment includes hard hat with brim, chemical safety goggles, hiU length face shield, mbber gaundet gloves, mbber apron, and mbber safety shoes or mbber boots worn over leather shoes. [Pg.233]

The Interstate Commerce Commission classifies toluene as a flammable Hquid. Accordingly, it must be packaged in authorized containers, and shipping must comply with ICC regulations. Properties related to safe handling are autoignition temperature, 536°C explosive limits, 1.27—7.0 vol % in air and flash point 4.4°C, closed cup. Standardization and Testing". The final vaccine is tested for safety, potency, and residual chemicals. Safety includes testing for endotoxin and stetihty. Potency is evaluated by quantitative determination of the amount of hemagglutinin in the vaccine. Antibody to this glycoprotein is associated with protection. The single radial immunodiffusion (SKID) technique is used to standardi2e the mass of this protein in comparison to a reference preparation. [Pg.358]

For handling chi orohydrin s, chemical safety goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, OSHA/MSHA approved respirators, and other protective clothing are required. In case of contact, one should immediately flush eyes or skin with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes and remove contaminated clothing and shoes. If inhaled, the person should be moved to fresh air (72). [Pg.75]
