Chemical reactivity diiron complexes

A characteristic feature of the present model systems is their dimerization to yield a tetrametallated peroxide intermediate or transition state. In the proteins the iron domains are sterically isolated from one another, thereby precluding such a dimerization reaction. Future efforts to model the chemical reactivity of these nonheme diiron protein cores must be directed toward the synthesis of complexes in which the metal centers are sufficiently hindered.
