Chemical distillation

Apparatus used for chemical distillation. The liquid in the left-hand bulb is heated over a Bunsen burner, and a reagent is added from the flask above it. The products of the ensuing chemical reaction can then be separated by distillation. The most volatile compound will boil off at the lowest temperature. Its vapor passes into the condenser, a tube that is surrounded by a cooling water jacket. The hot vapor cools and condenses on the walls of the tube and is then collected in the "receiver" flask on the right of the photo. (Courtesy of David Taylor/Science Photo Library)... [Pg.79]

The extraction process for radioisotopes is a combined chemical/distillation process in which the noble gases and iodine are first condensed from the target fill gas. Next, the UO2 fuel and fission products are dissolved from the inside of the target in an acidic solution and a wet chemistry process is used to selectively precipitate isotopes of interest. The precipitates are further washed, filtered, redissolved and purified. Finally, the isotope solution is prepared for shipment. [Pg.290]

The 6ix Again program of the BASF Corp. has been in operation since 1994. Its process involves collection of used nylon 6 carpet, shredding and separation of face fibers, pelletizing face fiber for depolymerization and chemical distillation to obtain a purified caprolactam monomer, and repolymerization of caprolactam into nylon polymer [32]. [Pg.704]
