Character living

The sound of a ticking clock in a scene may be simply part of ambient sound, or, as in High Noon, serve as a metaphor for the passage of time, bringing the hero inexorably closer to a showdown he does not want. Sometimes the long wail of a locomotive reminds us that our character lives near railroad tracks ... 

The key issue in writing melodrama in the short film is that there are classic commonalties between the long and short forms—the nature of the main character s struggle, his or her powerless against the power structure, the recognizability of character and situation, the characters living the lives that we do, and of course the narrative approach, which is essentially realist.

The implication that "living crops" can allelopathically suppress weeds has been made by Putnam and Duke (28) and Leather (29). These studies demonstrated that the potential for suppression of weeds could be enhanced by crop selection. Putnam and Duke (28) suggested that there is potential for breeding crops to better suppress weeds by utilizing and improving allelopathic characteristics. Fay and Duke (30) evaluated the amount of scopoletin (6-methoxy-7-hydroxy coumarin) exuded from 3,000 accessions of Avena sp. They suggested that the "wild types" of crop varieties could have once possessed allelopathic potential, but this character has been inadvertently selected against over time.
