The industrial value of furfuryl alcohol is a consequence of its low viscosity, high reactivity, and the outstanding chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of its polymers, corrosion resistance, nonburning, low smoke emission, and exceUent char formation. The reactivity profile of furfuryl alcohol and resins is such that final curing can take place at ambient temperature with strong acids or at elevated temperature with latent acids. Major markets for furfuryl alcohol resins include the production of cores and molds for casting metals, corrosion-resistant fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), binders for refractories and corrosion-resistant cements and mortars. [Pg.80]

Deflocculation and Slurry Thinning. Sihcates are used as deflocculants, ie, agents that maintain high sohds slurry viscosities at increased sohds concentrations. Soluble sihcates suppress the formation of ordered stmctures within clay slurries that creates resistance to viscous flow within the various sytems. Laboratory trials are necessary, because the complexity of the systems precludes the use of a universal deflocculant. Sulfur as an Additive for Asphalt. Sulfur-extended asphalt (SEA) binders are formulated by replacing some of the asphalt cement (AC) in conventional binders with sulfur. Binders that have sulfur asphalt weight ratios as high as 50 50 have been used, but most binders contain about 30 wt % sulfur. Greater latitude in design is possible for SEA paving materials, which are three-component systems, whereas conventional asphalt paving materials are two-component systems. Introduction of sulfur can provide some substantial benefits. At temperatures above 130°C, SEA binders have lower viscosities than conventional asphalt. Specifications for paving asphalt cements usually include five grades differing in either viscosity or penetration level at 60 °C (Table 8) (ASTM D496). Concrete, Mortar, and Plaster. Citric acid and citrate salts are used as admixtures in concrete, mortar, and plaster formulations to retard setting times and reduce the amount of water requited to make a workable mixture (172—180). The citrate ion slows the hydration of Portland cement and acts as a dispersant, reducing the viscosity of the system (181). At levels below 0.1%, citrates accelerate the setting rate while at 0.2—0.4% the set rate is retarded. This performance results from saponification resistance ia the preseace of the alkaH from the cement. Furthermore because masoary surfaces are porous, having both small and large pores, the low viscosity external phase of a latex paint can penetrate rapidly iato the small pores, causiag a rapid iacrease ia the viscosity of the remaining paiat. During World War II, polychloroprene was chosen as a replacement for natural rubber because of its availability. Two copolymers of chloroprene and sulphur which contain thiuram disulphide were available (Neoprene GN and CG). One of the first successful applications of these polychloroprene adhesives was for temporary and permanent sole attachment in the shoe industry. However, these polychloroprene cements show a decrease in viscosity on ageing and a black discolouration appears during storage in steel drums. Discolouration was produced by trace amounts of hydrochloric acid produced by oxidation of polychloroprene... [Pg.589]

There are 16 grades of DuPont neoprene alone. They vary in crystallization rate and potential, viscosity, molecular weight, additive content, and other properties ([216], pp. 284-306). DlatomaceOUS Earth. Diatomaceous earth has a lower specific gravity than bentonite. Like bentonite this additive also requires additional water to be added to the slurry. This additive will affect the slurry properties similar to the addition of bentonite. However, it will not increase the viscosity as bentonite will do. Diatomaceous earth concentrations as high as 40% by weight of cement have been used. This additive is more expensive than bentonite. [Pg.1195]

Examples of commonly used viscosity control additives are calcium ligno-sulfonate, sodium chloride and some long-chain polymers. These additives also act as accelerators or retarders so care must be taken in designing the cement slurry with these materials. [Pg.1200]
