Formation of cellulose ethers and esters has shown that for every six carbon atoms contained in one C6H,0O5 group there are three free hydroxyl groups capable of undergoing esterification or forming ethers. It has also been established that the copper salts of Fehling s solution are reduced by cellulose only to a small extent. Those facts, supported by a series of studies devoted to the products of uncomplete hydrolysis of cellulose, for instance the isolation of cellotriose (Haworth, Hirst and H. A. Thomas [16]), provide suffident evidence that a molecule of cellulose... [Pg.217]

In respect to its ability for degrading H3P04-swollen cellulose, Ci is similar to Cx, but the mode of attack clearly is different (Figure 2). Whereas Ci attacks from the end of the chain and produces little change in degree of polymerization, Cx attacks at random. Glucose, cellobiose, and cellotriose are found in the products of the action of Cx C i produces principally cellobiose, as would be expected from a cellobiohydrolase. [Pg.186]

Endoglucanase and cellobiohydrolase enzyme fractions, obtained from DEAE-Sepharose column chromatography of crude enzyme from in-house-grown T. reesei culture filtrates, were examined for activity on cellulose. As expected, cellobiohydrolase action resulted in cellobiose formation while cellotriose as well as cellobiose was formed by the action of endoglucanase. In both cases, the formation of glucose was minimal. Examination of the combined activity of these components on celluloses, showed a certain degree of synergism does exist. [Pg.286]

Oat /3-glucan (or oat lichenin) is constituted similarly to the barley polysaccharide, but contains (1 — 4)- and (1 — 3)-linkages in the proportions of60 2 1 or61 3 1. Partial, acid hydrolysis of the polysaccharide yields cel-lobiose, laminaribiose, cellotriose, and the two trisaccharides XLVI and XLVII containing both (1 — 3)- and (1 — 4)-linkages.61 On the basis of these results, the following partial structure (XLVIII) has been proposed.61... [Pg.459]
