Cationic polymerization practical considerations

Conjugated dienes (1,3-butadiene, isoprene) have suitable nucleophilicity to undergo cationic polymerization. There is, however, not much practical interest in these processes since the polymers formed are inferior to those produced by other (free-radical, coordination) polymerizations. A significant characteristic of these polymers is the considerably less than theoretical unsaturation due to cyclization processes.132 A fully cyclized product of isoprene has been synthesized163 by constant potential electrolysis in CH2C12. [Pg.740]

Most of the ionic photoinitiators were developed for use in cationic polymerizations due to practical considerations. These considerations are based on the fact that the anionic photoinitiators are more sensitive to oxygen inhibition than are even the free-radical ones. They are also sensitive to moisture. Some anionic photoinitiators, however, were described in the literature. None appear to be utilized commercially. [Pg.87]

The polymerization of lactams (cyclic amides) can be initiated by bases, acids, and water [Reimschuessel, 1977 Sebenda, 1976, 1978 Sekiguchi, 1984]. Initiation by water, referred to as hydrolytic polymerization, is the most often used method for industrial polymerization of lactams. Anionic initiation is also practiced, especially polymerization in molds to directly produce objects from monomer. Cationic initiation is not useful because the conversions and polymer molecular weights are considerably lower. [Pg.569]
