Catalytic and ionic hydrogenations may be combined to carry out catalytic ionic hydrogenation.216 In these cases the catalyst, either a heterogeneous or a homogeneous transition metal, serves as a hydride ion transfer agent. 

In the classical hydrogenation catalysis the substrate must be coordinated to the metal prior to its insertion into a M-H bond. However, very recently the possibility of ionic hydrogenation of unsaturated substrates (such as ketones or imines) in which the coordination of the substrate to the metal is not required, has been recognized.
