Catalyst degradation, SO2 strength, and feed gas temperature

Si02 catalyst begins to degrade when continuously operated above 900 K (Table 8.1). This can be a problem with high SO2 strength feed gas. 

A number of acid plants use two layers of catalyst in their first catalyst beds  

About one-third of the bed is Cs-enhanced catalyst two-thirds is K, Na catalyst.
