Carbon monoxide from offgas

Raw synthesis gas is a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor and residual unconverted hydrocarbons. Hydrogen and carbon-monoxide-rich offgas streams from petrochemical and refinery processes contain these and other contaminents such as nitrogen, argon and sulfur compounds. Separation and purification is necessary to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide suitable for use as feedstock in petrochemical processes and a variety of methods have been developed to achieve these separations. [Pg.81]

Many industrial processes produce significant quantities of carbon monoxide-rich offgas. Unfortunately, the processes generating the largest quantities and most concentrated streams are normally not within proximity of major petrochemical complexes and many of these processes are also in declining industries. As a result, carbon monoxide has not often been recovered from these sources for petrochemicals. Table 4 lists the major sources and approximate gas composition [17]. [Pg.99]

Tenneco developed the COSORB process in the 1970s to recover carbon monoxide from syngas and offgas streams. It consists of an absorber and... [Pg.104]

The emission streams from purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plants commonly contain carbon monoxide, methyl bromide, and various volatile organic compounds (VOC s). Before the vent gas (offgas) is exhausted to the atmosphere, these contaminants (often regulated) must be destroyed, normally by the catalytic oxidation process. Currently, most commercially available catalysts are used at an inlet terrperature higher dian 350 C. The improvement of the catalyst activity is desired to increase the catalyst life-time and to reduce the operational cost. Additionally, the catalyst selectivity needs to be improved to minimize or eliminate the formation of polybromobenzenes (PBB s) which can cause plugging or blockage in process lines. [Pg.196]
