Carbohydrates metal-containing derivatives

Various chemical species influence the rates of hydrolysis of penicillins, e.g. metal ions (Cu >Zn >Ni Co ) (80JCS(P2)1725), carbohydrates (78MI51101), certain amine-containing catechol derivatives (69JPS1102) and /3-cyclodextrin (71JA767). Some of these even show some of the characteristics of enzyme-catalyzed hydrolyses. 

Many proteins contain carbohydrates and lipids, covalently bound to amino acid side-chains. Others contain covalently bound cofactors and prosthetic groups, such as vitamins and their derivatives, metal ions or haem. Again the attachment of these non-amino acid parts of the protein is part of the process of post-translational modification to form the active protein. 

Active immobilized forms of antibiotics have been prepared by treating the amino-groups of carbohydrate-containing antibiotics with cellulose trans-2,3-carbonate, and by chelation to transition-metal hydroxides and transition-metal derivatives of cellulose. ... 

We recently have been emphasizing the use of renewable resource materials as feed stocks for the production of non-petroleum based polymers containing metals. While the biological activities of some of these products has been reported, emphasis has generally been placed on the synthetic and structural characterization. Here the focus will be placed on the biological activities of some of these products, specifically those derived from monomeric and polymeric carbohydrates.
