Carbamates (2) generally have Ri as a phenyl or substituted phenyl, and R2 can be various aliphatic or aryl groups. For these compounds, log Xow ranges from 2.5 to 4.2, except for carbetamide and karbutilate which are more polar (log Xqw 1) Propham and chlorpropham are soil applied, being taken up by roots and translocated to shoots. The coleoptile may be affected directly, since both compounds are quite volatile and a proportion of uptake may occur via the vapor phase. The other carbamates are less volatile and are applied postemergence to the leaves of weeds except for karbutilate (which contains both carbamate and urea functions), which is applied to soil for residual control of vegetation.
