Bunge et al. investigated the headspace above E. coli. Shigella flexneri. Salmonella enterica and Candida tropicalis bacterial cultures [14], It was found that C. tropicalis could be uniquely identified by several characteristic marker ions, while E. coli and S. enterica could be discriminated from each other and from S. milleri by specific marker ions. The temporal profiles of the VOC concentrations were also investigated for the first time in this work. It was concluded that temporal effects during cell growth need to be taken into account for the characterization or differentiation of cell types based on VOC emissions. [Pg.291]
