The Athabasca deposits have been known since the early 1800s. The first scientific iaterest ia tar sands was taken by the Canadian government ia 1890, and ia 1897—1898, the sands were first drilled at PeHcan Rapids on the Athabasca River. Up until 1960, many small-scale commercial enterprises were attempted but not sustained. Between 1957 and 1967, three extensive pilot-plant operations were conducted ia the Athabasca region, each leading to a proposal for a commercial venture, eg, Suncor and Syncmde. 

Canadian. By government regulation, Canadian whiskeys contain no distilled spidts less than three years old. They are usually blended products and are often up to six years of age. Canadian whisky tends to be light bodied and deHcate in flavor. The Canadian government sets no limitations as to mashing formulas, distilling proofs, or types of cooperage used in maturation. 

Ethyl Carbamate. In November 1985, the Canadian Government indicated that it had detected ethyl carbamate [51-79-6] (urethane), a suspected carcinogen, in some wines and distilled spirits. Since that time, the U.S. distilled spirits industry has mounted a serious effort to monitor and reduce the amount of ethyl carbamate (EC) in its products. In December 1985, the Canadian Government set limits of 150 ppb in distilled spirits and 400 ppb in fmit brandies, cordials, and Hqueurs. The FDA accepted a plan in 1987 from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) to reduce ethyl carbamate in whiskey to 125 ppb or less, beginning with all new production in January 1989.

Bioavailability from Environmental Media. No information on the presence of 3,3 -dichloro-benzidine in foods was located in the available literature. The Canadian Government s Priority Substances List Assessment Report for 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine (Government of Canada 1993) also reports that no data on the levels of 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine in drinking water or foodstuffs were identified within either Canada or the United States. Because 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine has been found to bind strongly to soil constituents (Berry and Boyd 1985 Chung and Boyd 1987), Law (1995) concluded that it would also bind strongly to sedimentary material in the marine aquatic environment and thus may have limited bioavailability. 

Meanwhile AECL and other Canadian departnents and agencies are participating actively in the International Nuclear Fuel Cycle Evaluation (INFCE) to study all fuel cycle options. Anaerobic-aerobic processes have a high potential for the treatment of pulp mill wastewater containing xenobiotic compounds. The pulp and paper industry is under great pressure to remove chlorophenols, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated dioxins and furans from wastewater. The Canadian government requires that pulp mill effluent contain no measurable level of dioxins or furans (Murray Richardson, 1993)- Such regulations require novel wastewater treatment technologies for the complete removal of target compounds.
