Camphor ammoniated

Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) contains a variety of opioid and related alkaloids, including codeine, morphine, noscapine, papaverine, and thebaine. Crude opium is the air-dried latex obtained by incising the unripe capsules of P. somniferum. Paregoric is ammoniated tincture of opium (Scotch paregoric) or camphorated tincture of opium (English paregoric). The use of these formulations has largely been replaced by use of the purified compounds. 

Ammoniated Liniment of Camphor, jB.P.C. A mixture of camphor and ammonia in alcohol containing oil of lavender. Ammonia may be determined by adding 5 ml to an excess of 0-5N acid and back-titrating with 0-5N sodium hydroxide to methyl red. 1 ml 0 5N = 0 008515 g. 

To apply their method to ammoniated liniment of camphor, liniment of soap, and liniment of turpentine, Mital and Gaind found a previous steam distillation was necessary and the following method may be used. 

The chemical method for determination of camphor given above under Camphor, may be applied directly, without modification, using 2 ml of spirit and diluting to 25 ml with ethanol. The gas chromatographic procedure can be used exactly as given under Ammoniated Liniment of Camphor.
