California Interior Valley

In 1977, 2,341,000 tons were crushed in California in the following districts Interior Valley, 2,052,300 tons, and coastal areas (including southern Californa) 288,700 tons. 

The breakdown of varieties for the Interior Valley was as follows wine, 1,205,900 tons raisin, 569,800 tons table, 277,100 tons making a total of 2,052,300 tons. The breakdown of varieties for the Coastal areas (including southern California) was wine, 265,600 tons raisin, 21,200 tons table, 1900 tons making a total of 288,700 tons. 

The largest wineries in California are situated in the Interior Valley, although some comparatively new, large wineries are now established in the coastal regions as well. 

The same chemical principles presented by the speakers on red (p. 59) and white table wine (p. 29) production are applicable to table wine production in the Interior Valley. Differences in the size of the winery operations and grape maturity are attributable to regional climatic conditions. With modern viticultural practices, the grapes grown for winemaking in this interior region now produce quality wines and they also comprise the largest volume of table wines produced in California. 

Two different portions of the California coast could be distinguished on the basis of the isotopes. Basically it was possible to determine if shells came from the northern two-thirds, or the southern third of the state s coast. Analyses of a small sample of six prehistoric beads are from the Owens Valley in southeastern California and four from interior northern California, at distances up to several hundred kilometers from the sea, indicated that all ten were made in southern California.
