Building, cinder block

The outer walls of a building should be commensurate with the security risk. The use of robust construction and materials (e.g. those resistant to manual attack and damage) is essential to the initial provision of security. Criminals will exploit weaknesses in walls. Where lightweight claddings are employed, a reinforcing lining such as welded steel mesh can enhance security. Where the security risk is high it may be necessary to reinforce even brick or cinder block walls in a similar... [Pg.168]

Can radon get into your home Radon can enter homes and other buildings through cracks in concrete foundations and slab floors porous cinder-block walls unsealed, poorly ventilated crawl spaces and small areas around water and sewer pipes. In the early 1970s, radon started to cause more extensive problems. People made their... [Pg.777]

Construction of Sulfur Building. A 10 X 20-ft building was designed to be constructed of commercial cinder block and consisted of two rooms divided by a cinder block wall. The building was erected on a concrete slab. The first course of block was laid and leveled on the slab. It was then bonded to the slab by pouring about 1/2 in. of the molten formulation into each block as shown in Figure 1. Then more cinder blocks were stacked to form the four walls (Figure 2). Because commercial cinder blocks are not perfectly square, it was necessary after the fourth course of block was laid to splash some of the molten formulation inside the blocks to keep the courses level and to stabilize the walls. At this point, the steel door frames were inserted into the walls. [Pg.65]

A room divider wall of cinder block was stacked after the outer walls were completed. The walls and the partition were then surface-bonded. Figure 6 shows a workman spraying the sulfur formulation to surface-bond the blocks. Both the inside and the outside walls of the building were sprayed, each with two coats of formulation. [Pg.67]

Results. The cinder block surface-bonded by spraying with the sulfur formulation gave a structurally sound building. The pertinent data for this process are given in Table I. [Pg.68]

A sulfur spray formulation containing sulfur, talc, Fiberglas, and dicyclopentadiene was successfully used to construct a block building. The dry-stacked cinder blocks were surface-bonded for structural stability by spraying with a thin coating of the molten formulation. The same formulation also formed an impervious lining on a dirt-formed pond. [Pg.81]
