On 17 February 1849 Jean Baptiste Boussingault, the presiding officer of the Parisian Academy of Sciences, appointed Jean Baptiste Dumas, Frangois Magen-die, and Henri Milne Edwards as a committee to evaluate a paper that had just been read by Claude Bernard. The next week, Dumas reported on behalf of the committee that its task had been easy. The results observed by the young physiologist, he said, their novelty, their precision, their importance, and their exact interconnections, make the paper worthy of publication.
