Methylamine, bond angles

Like the carbon atom in methane and the nitrogen atom in methylamine, the oxygen atom in methanol (methyl alcohol) and many other organic molecules can also be described as sp3-hybridized. The C-O-H bond angle in methanol is 108.5°, very close to the 109.5° tetrahedral angle. Two of the four sp3 hybrid... [Pg.19]

Parameters for bond angles were derived in a similar manner, first by considering the methylamines only, and later by modifying the resulting parameters to reproduce the observed structures of the bulkier amines, diisopropylamine and di-t-butylamine. The N—C—C angle was chosen to fit ethylamine. However, since in its current form the force field cannot reproduce the experimentally observed dependence of this angle on the... [Pg.23]

The experimentally measured H-N-H bond angle in methylamine is 107.1° and the C-N-H bond angle is 110.3°, both of which are close to the 109.5° tetrahedral angle found in methane. We therefore assume that nitrogen hybridizes to form four sp orbitals, just as carbon does. One of the four orbitals... [Pg.19]
