The American Heart Association has recently moved to redefine transient ischentic attack (TIA) in a manner similar to cardiac angina, as a transient episode of neurological dysfunction caused by focal brain, spinal cord, or retinal ischemia, withoutacute infarction [92], Previously, it had been known as an acute neurologic deficit of presumed vascular etiology that resolves within 24 h, but a growing body of evidence showed that the definition was too broad and included many DW images-defined infarcts that had missed the window for intervention. [Pg.163]

A considerable body of scientific work has been accomplished in the past to define and characterize point defects. One major reason is that sometimes, the energy of a point defect can be calculated. In others, the charge-compensation within the solid becomes apparent. In many cases, if one deliberately adds an Impurity to a compound to modify its physical properties, the charge-compensation, intrinsic to the defect formed, can be predicted. We are now ready to describe these defects in terms of their energy and to present equations describing their equilibria. One way to do this is to use a "Plane-Net". This is simply a two-dimensional representation which uses symbols to replace the spherical images that we used above to represent the atoms (ions) in the structure. [Pg.88]

Multiway and particularly three-way analysis of data has become an important subject in chemometrics. This is the result of the development of hyphenated detection methods (such as in combined chromatography-spectrometry) and yields three-way data structures the ways of which are defined by samples, retention times and wavelengths. In multivariate process analysis, three-way data are obtained from various batches, quality measures and times of observation [55]. In image analysis, the three modes are formed by the horizontal and vertical coordinates of the pixels within a frame and the successive frames that have been recorded. In this rapidly developing field one already finds an extensive body of literature and only a brief outline can be given here. For a more comprehensive reading and a discussion of practical applications we refer to the reviews by Geladi [56], Smilde [57] and Henrion [58]. [Pg.153]

An important parameter, CT dose index (CTDI, defined as the cumulative dose along the patient s axis for a single tomographic image), should be evaluated at least semiannually at different values of kVp and mA. It is measured by using an ionization chamber or a thermoluminescent dosimeters placed in a tissue-equivalent acrylic phantom simulating head or body. ACR (2007) recommends maximum doses CTDI) of 6 rad (60 mGy) for brain, 3.5 rad (35 mGy) for adult abdomen and 2.5 rad (25 mGy) for pediatric (5-year-old) abdomen.
