Withdrawal schemes which involve purgation, hyoscine, belladonna, lecithin, blisters, auto-hemotherapy, and hypnosis are valueless and some are dangerous. Insulin was valueless in preventing or ameliorating abstinence signs and it increased the discomfort of addicts undergoing withdrawal. Abrupt withdrawal is seldom used since it carries a small risk of death and because it is unnecessary and cruel. Sudden or too rapid withdrawal may cause death but unwise treatments have contributed to most withdrawal deaths (6). 

The skin manifestations of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion have been studied in 40 children aged under 6 years (mean age 2.3 years) compared with 38 children over 6 years (mean age 8.4 years) [10 ]. Small scars of less than 3 mm were the most commonly reported events, and there were slightly fewer in the younger children 20 (50%) compared with 27 (71%). Lipohypertrophy was also common at the insertion sites 18 (45%) and 18 (47%) respectively. Erythema and blisters were less common, but occurred more often in those who had reported an allergic predisposition before starting subcutaneous...
