The development of the first beta-blockers by ICl was essentially based on the scientific work of the Scottish pharmacologist Sir James Black (1924-2010). For his "discoveries of important principles for drug treatment" i.e. propranolol and cimetidine, he was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
