Silver halide salts are used in black and white photography. During the developing process, excess silver halide is removed from the film by using a solution of sodium thiosulfate (commonly called hypo ). 

Care should be taken when determining X, for salts such as these since their photostability is poor, cf. the Standard use of such salts in black and white photography. Therefore, the experiment is best performed in the dark, or by employing light of low photon energy (e.g. using red filters).
