Bisnaphthalenes

Bisnaphthalenes. Chandross and Dempster (16,110) showed that l,3-bls(a-naphtyl) propane [43], on excitation above -30 C, results in the formation of a complex which at this temperature can either fluoresce or collapse into product [44], Irradiation of [44] at 77 K resulted in the reverse reaction and excimer fluorescence, but no excimer phosphorescence of this cleaved dimer could be observed (111). This clearly indicated that on the way to product collapse an excited state complex is formed. 

The formation of a novel metal-free phthalocyanine as well as its metallo-counterparts possessing four fused 21-membered oxatetrathiadiaza macrocycles on their periphery was prepared (21%) via cyclotetramerization of a bisdicarbonitrile (13JOMC65). A related series 16- and 18-membered azo- and azoxythiacrown ethers, e.g., 52, was synthesized by the reductive macrocyclization of related bis(nitrophenoxy)oxaalkanes, which were created from catechol, 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene or 2,2 -dihydroxy-l,l -bisnaphthalene in a simple three-step process (13T10662).

The use of bisnaphthalene chromium and (naphthalene)Cr(CO complexes as reagents for further arene complexes has been examined. The (naphthalene)Cr(CO) substitutes 10 /10 times faster than monocyclic arenes.
