Retirement age—Retirement at age 65 is believed to have been first used by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck of Germany in 1889, when he set up the first nationwide old age pension plan. Since then, other nations and certain employers have established retirement ages which vary according to the work performed. For example, people who perform hard, laborious tasks may be allowed to retire as early as age 55, whereas, the usual retirement age for Roman Catholic clergy is 75. [Pg.505]
