Although early F NMR studies appeared to indicate that (CFj)2Hg and (CH3)2Cd undergo ligand exchange reactions in basic solvents like pyridine, no products from the reaction had been isolated. The procedure that follows depends upon the observation that the methyl, trifluoromethyl, and mixed methyl- 

The vessel is then removed from the vacuum line and placed in a glove box or polyethylene glove bag, and the product is scraped out by means of a long- 

The compound (CF3)2Cd glyme is soluble in ethers and haloalkanes, sparingly soluble in arenes, and insoluble in alkanes. The product is best stored under Nj or Ar at low temperatures, since thermal decomposition, 5%/day, occurs at ambient temperature.
