Biphenylene crystal structure

Finally, like biphenylene [107a, 108], phenylenes appear to be readily complexed by chromium tricarbonyl. For example, exposure of 15 to [Cr(CO)3(NH3)3] produced complex 114 (Scheme 4.29a) [109]. The crystal structure of 114 (Fig. 4.7(b)) showed that the three Cr-C-O axes are perpendicular to those of the formal single bonds of 15 [110]. Similarly, the branched skeleton of 21a is susceptible to metalation by Cr(CO)3, however, here giving rise to two regioisomeric complexes... 

The structure of biphenylene has been investigated by electron-diffraction of the vapour (Waser and Schomaker, 1943) and by X-ray analysis of single crystals (Waser and Lu, 1944). This work established the structure of biphenylene as (29) and ruled out (30) which had been proposed by Baker (1942) and supported by Coulson (1942).

Dimethyl-4,4 -bis(4-aminophenoxy)biphenyl has a non-coplanar disubstituted biphenylene moiety and flexible aryl units. The incorporation of the disubstituted biphenylene in a polymer chain will not change the rod-like structure of the polymer backbone but reduces the interchain interactions. The tendency to crystallize and the transition temperatures are lowered and the solubility is enhanced. ...
