We pause here to consider a final reported application of [NiFe]-hydrogenases as oxidative catalysts. Although the devices are not always technically fuel cells, the electrocatalytic principles are closely related. In 2011, Shastik et al. created a unique combination of a bioreactor together with a hydrogenase electrode [93]. The bioreactor was stocked with a microbial consortium adept at fermentation of starch.
