Bills of attainder

According to the court The ordinance defines assault weapon as any one of thirty-four specific rifles, three specific shotguns and nine specific pistols, or [ojther models by the same manufacturer with the same action design that have slight modifications or enhancements. ... The plaintiffs claimed that because the law referred only to specific models by specific manufac-mrers (or possible future models by the same manufacturers), it was an un-constimtional bill of attainder. (A bill of attainder is a law that punishes specific individuals without trial.) The plaintiffs also argued that the law was unconstitutionally vague. 

I. No State shall enter into any treaty, alliance or confederation, grant letters of marque and reprisal, coin money, emit bills of credit, make any thing but gold and silver a legal tender in payment of debts pass any bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law impairing the obligation of contracts, or grant any title of nobility [Art. i, sect. 10]. ... 

In the gth section [of Art. i], it is declared, no bill of attainder shall be passed. This clause takes from the legislature all power to declare a particular person guilty of a crime by law. It is proper the legislature should be deprived of the exercise of this power, because it seldom is exercised to the benefit of the community, but generally to its injury. 

No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed. 

Section 10. No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal coin Money emit Bills of Credit make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.
