Coal gas plants were built in a number of towns from 1853 to 1916 (one opened as late as 1927). The quantities of tar were not comparable with those obtained from metallurgical coke plants. Coal tar was not utilized in Denmark until 1916 when two chemistry professors, Einar Biilmann (1873-1946) and Peter Esch Raaschou (1883-1971), took the first initiative. A plant was built close to Copenhagen for distillation of tar, refining of benzene, production of nitrobenzene, etc. But after the end of World War I these products were no longer competitive, and the tar was used in road construction.
