Bergbau-Forschung process

Generon Not a process, but a trademark used by BOC and Dow to designate their processes for separating nitrogen from air by either the PSA process or a membrane process. The PSA process is based on the Bergbau-Forschung process. The membrane process uses the GENERON HP membrane developed by the Dow Chemical Company. See also NOVOX.

A diagram of the pilot facility is shown in Figure 7. The sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water were metered, blended, and brought to temperature by a fired heater so that the mixture entered the reactor at a temperature and composition representative of the off-gas from the Bergbau Forschung process. The reactor of 2 cu ft volume contained a rice-size anthracite coal bed which moved downward slowly... 

In the Bergbau-Forschung process, phenanthrene is first hydrogenated to sym-octahydrophenanthrene, then converted to sym-octahydroanthracene, and finally dehydrogenated. 

Bergbau-Forschung/Uhde A flue-gas desulfurization process that uses a movable bed of hot coke. Operated in a power station in Arzberg, Germany, since 1987. 

FW-BF [Foster Wheeler-Bergbau-Forschung] A dry flue-gas desulfurization process that combines the sulfur removal system of Bergbau-Forschung, which uses a carbon adsorbent, with the Foster-Wheeler process for oxidizing adsorbed sulfur to sulfuric acid. 

IG-NUE A coal liquifaction process developed by Bergbau-Forschung in Germany during World War II. Catalytic metal salts were impregnated in, or precipitated on, the coal. A pilot plant was to have been built in Westphalia in 1977.

Mitsui-BF [Bergbau-Forschung] A process for removing sulfur dioxide from flue gas by adsorption on a moving bed of activated coke. A complex process leads to the production of sulfuric acid. 

In addition to this wet scrubbing process, dry purification processes are also utilized for the removal of sulfur dioxide from furnace gases, such as the absorption of sulfur dioxide on activated charcoal (BF-process from Bergbau Forschung).
