Classification.—Until the constitution of the albuminoids shall have been established, a rational classification of them will remain impossible. For the present a provisional arrangement of the albuminoids of animal origin, based upon their solubilities, is adopted. The vegetable albuminoids are conveniently classified by themselves. The division into albuminoids and gela-tinoids formerly followed, and based upon the production of aromatic derivatives by decomposition of the former and the absence of such products in the case of the latter, has been abandoned for the reason that benzoic acid and other aromatic substances have been obtained by decomposition of gelatin. [Pg.476]

There is considerable overlap between work on phenolic acids and that on aromatic carboxylic acids. Relatively few aromatic acids other than benzoic acid and the isomeric dicarboxylic acids have major industrial significance. Hydroxybenzoic acids, as either salicylic, 4-hydroxybenzoic or gallic acid (3,4,S-trihydroxybenzoic acid), tend to appear under both phenolic and aromatic acid classifications. In this section as with the previous one on phenols, a summary of the systems which have been used and the applications of TLC in the analysis of derivatives of aromatic acids is given. [Pg.912]

More frequently, alkyd resins are described by a combined classification in terms of their oil length, the type of fatty acids, and any unusual ingredients. Such descriptions as an isophthalic, very long tall oil alkyd or a medium oil dehydrated castor-PE (the PE refers to pentaerythritol, not polyethylene) alkyd or a short oil lauric-benzoic alkyd would immediately project the general properties of the resin. [Pg.3299]

This law, written under the influence of dualistic ideas, and at a period when but a very crude classification of bodies had been established, cannot be sustained at the present day. Even the examples then adduced by Dumas for the support of his law, now bear witness against it. Thus the transformations of the hydrides of benzoyl and cinnamyl into benzoic and cinnamic acids, being formulated thus ... [Pg.201]

In standard classification for vinyl plastics used in biomedical applications, a plasticizer is specified with prefix letter The letter is followed by a number from 1 to 14 which characterizes the type of plasticizer (e g., 1 - none, 2 - adipic acid derivative, 3 -azelaic, 4 - benzoic, 5 - citric, 6 - isophthalic, 7 - myristic, 8 - phosphoric, 9 - phthalic, 10 - sebacic, 11 - terephthalic, 12 - poly ether, 13 - polyethylene glycol, 14 - polyesters, 999 - other). The second letter specifies secondary plasticizer (e.g., A - none, B - alkyl epoxy stearates, C - epoxidized tall oil, D - epoxidized soybean oil, E - epoxidized linseed oil, F - epoxidized sunflower oil, Z - other). This classification is used to guide design engineers. Classification is not applicable to long-term implants. If there is a conflict between provisions of this standard and detailed specification for a particular device, the latter takes precedence. [Pg.83]
