Classification.—Until the constitution of the albuminoids shall have been established, a rational classification of them will remain impossible. For the present a provisional arrangement of the albuminoids of animal origin, based upon their solubilities, is adopted. The vegetable albuminoids are conveniently classified by themselves. The division into albuminoids and gela-tinoids formerly followed, and based upon the production of aromatic derivatives by decomposition of the former and the absence of such products in the case of the latter, has been abandoned for the reason that benzoic acid and other aromatic substances have been obtained by decomposition of gelatin.

There is considerable overlap between work on phenolic acids and that on aromatic carboxylic acids. Relatively few aromatic acids other than benzoic acid and the isomeric dicarboxylic acids have major industrial significance. Hydroxybenzoic acids, as either salicylic, 4-hydroxybenzoic or gallic acid (3,4,S-trihydroxybenzoic acid), tend to appear under both phenolic and aromatic acid classifications. The second letter specifies secondary plasticizer (e.g., A - none, B - alkyl epoxy stearates, C - epoxidized tall oil, D - epoxidized soybean oil, E - epoxidized linseed oil, F - epoxidized sunflower oil, Z - other). This classification is used to guide design engineers. Classification is not applicable to long-term implants. If there is a conflict between provisions of this standard and detailed specification for a particular device, the latter takes precedence.
