The rate of decomposition of benzenesulphonyl azide to benzene-sulphonamide is said to be accelerated appreciably by thiophenol 18> in a radical-catalyzed process probably not involving a free nitrene intermediate. 

A more explicit separation of transmission routes is illustrated in the dissociation of N-phenyl benzene sulphonamides (9) where the effect of the substituent in the aniline residue Y has a manifestly different path from that of X in the benzene sulfonyl residue.

Dissimilarity with Benzoylation. It has been observed that there is one vital difference between the benzoyl and the sulphonyl derivatives of amines. Importantly, when the primary- and secondary-samnes are made to react with Benzoyl Chloride, it gives rise to mono-and di-substituted structural analogues of benzamide and when subjected to treatment with Benzenesulphonyl Chloride, 3neld similar derivatives of benzene sulphonamide.

Similarly to acyl chlorides, arylsulphonyl chlorides react with primary and secondary amines. A number of arylsulphonyl chlorides have also been investigated by Clark and Wells [9]. The reaction and the conditions of derivatiz-ation used were similar to those for acyl chlorides. The spectrophotometric properties of some typical benzene-sulphonamides are given in Table 2.
