We would like to point out that an order parameter indicates the static property of the lipid bilayer, whereas the rotational motion, the oxygen transport parameter (Section 4.1), and the chain bending (Section 4.4) characterize membrane dynamics (membrane fluidity) that report on rotational diffusion of alkyl chains, translational diffusion of oxygen molecules, and frequency of alkyl chain bending, respectively. The EPR spin-labeling approach also makes it possible to monitor another bulk property of lipid bilayer membranes, namely local membrane hydrophobicity. [Pg.194]

The elastic bending modulus Kc for lipid bilayers was found to be of the order of 10 x 10-20 J.6 For the lyotropic lamellar liquid crystals, the additional presence of a cosurfactant at the interface shouldleadto smaller values. Various experimental measurements21 provided values ranging between 0.08 and 5 x 10-20 J. [Pg.316]

Since the model was developed for two bilayers in water and was compared to experimental results for lipid bilayer/ water multilayers, no complete accuracy is expected for the values obtained by fitting. Particularly, the values obtained for the bending moduli are somewhat larger than those provided by literature. This might be a consequence of the increased rigidity of a multilayer, when compared to that of two bilayers, due to the correlation between the fluctuations of adjacent bilayers. [Pg.351]

The bending modulus Kc of the interfaces of the soap films is unknown however, one expects to be comparable to those of the lipid bilayers in water, which are of the... [Pg.539]

We note that the elasticity discussed above is only for planar bilayers under compression or tension and does not extend to the bending of bilayers. On the contrary, our analysis has shown that the bending of a bilayer is favoured down to the critical packing radius (assuming that the lipids can freely rearrange by lateral movement and/or flip-flop), and that bending elasticity sets in only for radii smaller than this critical value. The elasticity of a fluid bilayer is therefore seen to be profoundly different from that of a classical elastic plate or shell. [Pg.271]

Ultimately, sequestering charged lipids could potentially lead to a new stable state, in which bilayer bending forces favor membranes with local nonzero curvature. Moreover, the mechanism for coupling local lipid composition with membrane curvature may be complemented by a "local spontaneous curvature" mechanism [88], whereby the asymmetry between the spontaneous shapes of two monolayers is achieved by insertion of amphipathic N-terminal helices of certain BAR domains into the lipid polar head-groups region on one side of the membrane [7,88-95]. According to this mechanism, the insertion of an amphipathic... [Pg.248]
