Bedding fires

There are three basic modes of burning solid fuels, each identified with a furnace design specific for that mode in suspension, in a bed at rest on a grate (fuel-bed firing), or in a fluidized bed. Although many variations of these generic modes and furnace designs have been devised, the fundamental characteristics of equipment and procedure remain intact. They will be described briefly.

Some compounds, such as ketones, may cause carbon bed fires because of their high heat release upon adsorption. 

Bed Fire, Mix 16 parts sulphur, 23 parts carbonate of strontia, 61 parts chlorate of potassa. 

Orange Bed Fire. Take 14 parts sulphur, 34 chalk, 52 parts chlorate of potassa. 

Bed Fire. The following mixture is the best in use its composition may be altered by various admixtures ... 

Bed Fire. I, Forty parts of nitrate of strontium, 15 of sulphur, 5 of chlorate of potassium, and 2 of charcoal. 

Bed Fire according to Bratmschtveig-er. Nine parts of nitrate of strontium, 3 of shellac. 1.5 of chlorate of potassium. The snellae need only be coarsely powdered. The above 3 mixtures for red fire possess the advantage of not emitting injurious vapors, and can therefore be used in rooms, etc.

Bed Fire for Sta Bfibct. Mix 20 parts chlorate of potassa, 24 snlphur, 56 parts nitrate of strontia.
