A good barostat is necessary. Control of the reduced pressure by adjusting a leak in the system is entirely unsatisfactory, for as a result of a small increase in pressure, the liquid ceases to boil, the column drains, and the boiling-chips are rendered ineffective. The barostat used by the submitters is essentially that described by Ellis 2 in which the relay is replaced by the thermionic relay described by Waddle and Saeman.3... 

Temperature and pressure are calculated from standard formulas from statistical mechanics (equipartition kinetic energy and virial, respectively), and are regulated at preset values by computational thermostats and barostats.

This thesis has been examined by Harriet Dustan and myself. We took our patients who had been under exacting treatment for many years and withdrew all treatment, often substituting placebo. A number of them showed an immediate rise in pressure, but to our delight a number also showed no rise, even after a couple of years. It was as though keeping the pressure down had reset the barostats and the chemostats and now they worked to keep the pressure down instead of up.
