Shaking by a ball mill is most appropriate for this. Both intensity and duration of mechanical agitation have an influence on the liposome size and the loss of entrapped drug, i.e. encapsulation efficiency measured for the overall process (VPG formation and dilution, see below) (26). More qualitative details of the RSSIE process can be seen in Figure 12.1, which depicts the weight loss of Ga203/H-MFI mechanical mixtures determined by microbalance. In each case, the samples were dried in pure He at 550"C, then Hj was switched in as noted. The sample ball-milled for only 0.75 h shows a much slower overall rate than the same formulation ball-milled for 6 h. This experiment shows the utility of very intimate mixtures for enhancing the rate of the RSSIE process. [Pg.287]
