Bacterial cholangitis

Thrombosis of small portal veins due to bacterial cholangitis with pericholangitis or to malignant and subsequently thrombotic processes can cause an increase in presinusoidal resistance.

Type V cyst is a rare congenital disease characterized by segmental-saccular ductal dilatation. Recurrent bacterial cholangitis and stone formation have been associated with "Caroli disease (Fig. 4.4b,c) (Todani et al. 2003).

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Chronic, non-bacterial inflammatory narrowing of the bile ducts. Often associated with ulcerative colitis. 

Cholangitis occurs in the presence of partial or complete obstruction of the common bile duct (CBD), with increased intraluminal pressures, bacterial infection of the bile with multiplication of the organisms within the duct, and seeding of the bloodstream with bacteria or endotoxin. Cholangitis can rapidly become a life-threatening condition.
