Twelve molecules of ATP are theoretically necessary for the reduction of one molecule of nitrogen gas catalyzed by nitrogenase. But actually at least 16 molecules of ATP are required for the enzymatic reduction of nitrogen gas, because hydrogen gas is inevitably produced during the reduction of nitrogen gas and ATP is necessary also for the production of hydrogen gas. [Pg.48]
