An asymmetric approach to the aldehyde lactone (44), an intermediate in 12-methylprostaglandin synthesis, has been outlined. Incubation of diacetate (45) with Bacillus subtillus affords monoacetate (46) which may be converted into the fused lactone (47) of 35 % optical purity.
