NMJs develop late in embryogenesis after the mature muscle pattern has been established, typically 12.5 hours after egg laying (AEL) at 22-25°C. Between 12.5 and 14.5 hours AEL, many of the initial contacts are established between the filopodia of the axonal growth cones and the muscles. Neuronal processes then explore the muscle surfaces and send out branches which finally retract to their terminal positions by approximately 14.5 hours AEL. During the next 2-3 hours (14.5-17 hours), swellings appear along the processes that have contacted the muscles. These swellings or boutons become more numerous and... [Pg.175]
