Autogenous technology

The biggest step forward for the autogenous technology was the ability to safely store and transport gases under pressure in special steel cylinders. This is especially valid for acetylene for which special measures had to be taken as a result of its thermal instability (proneness to decomposition). Acetylene can only be stored and transported safely in steel cylinders if it is dissolved in a suitable liquid, such as acetone, at a maximum pressure of 25 bar and if the solvent with the acetylene dissolved in it is absorbed inside the steel cylinder by a porous mass which does not conduct heat well.
