Assemblies and Salt Spray or Immersion Testing

Manufacture of assemblies and salt spray or immersion testing [Pg.161]

The advantage of salt spray or immersion tests is that they test rather realistic assemblies that are close to that of an actual structure, for example, profiles or sheet joined with bolts in stainless steel. [Pg.161]

They show possible risk of galvanic corrosion and make it possible to study how to protect aluminium. [Pg.161]

However, it should be noted that heterogeneous assemblies between aluminium and other metals exposed to salt sprays would always exhibit galvanic corrosion and generally very severe corrosion. This intensity is totally unrelated to what is observed during longterm exposure in outdoor corrosion testing stations, even in coastal areas or after an extended time of service. [Pg.161]

In fact, under salt-spray conditions, the galvanic coupling with stainless steel works very well, while no visible galvanic corrosion is observed on contacts between stainless steel and aluminium under service conditions, even in coastal areas. [Pg.161]
