Since ancient times gold has been produced by territories in the Urals, Caucasus, Kazakhstan, and Central Asia, with 60% deriving from placer deposits. By the 1970s, the Soviet Union was considered to be the second largest producer of gold in the world, although the precise amounts mined were not published. 

In recent years, India has produced about 2 tons of gold annually, using the cyanidation process. 

Gold has been discovered and mined in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and the Yukon Territory. The earliest recorded notice of gold in Canada was
