Arsines bidentate

Many, but not all, bidentate phosphine and arsine ligands form 2 1 complexes with these metals. M(diars)2X2 (diars = o-C6H4(AsMe3)2) contain 6-coordinate metals frans-Pd(diars)2I2 has long Pd-I bonds (3.52 A). These complexes are 1 1 electrolytes in solution, suggesting the presence of 5-coordinate M(diars)2X+ ions.

It was found that the platinum(II) complexes of these ligands were of two types. All isomers form compounds of the t)rpe PtBr2 (arsine) 2, some of which are illustrated in Fig. 5. In these compounds, coordination to the platinum is effected through the arsenic atom alone. In addition, the ortho isomers of both arsines form 1 1 complexes with platinum(II) bromide in which the ligand is bidentate. Both the arsenic atom and the double bond are coordinated to the platinum as shown in Fig. 6.

A large number of nickel(II) complexes with bidentate tertiary phosphines and arsines have been prepared and characterized since the initial reports on o-phenylenebisdimethylarsine and 1,2-bisdiphenylphosphinoethane (Table 64 XVIII, III) by Chatt and Mann,1267 and Wymore and Bailar126 respectively. The most common diphosphines, diarsines, distibines and mixed donor ligands are collected in Table 64 and selected nickel(II) complexes are reported in Table 65.

In contrast, the arsine analogues AsBu 2(o-tolyl) and AsBu (o-tolyl)2 yield the complexes fra/tf-[PdCl2L2] and these produced only metallic palladium under conditions which induced cydometallation in the case of their platinum analogues.100 The ligand PBu o-QH t) metallates at the a position, but PBu 2(o-C6H4Pri) produced only metallic palladium.35 Bidentate phosphines are generally reluctant to metallate internally. Reactions of Pt(O,0-MeCOCHCOMe)(MeCOCH2COMe)X (X = Cl, Br) with a wide variety of donors, including phosphines, arsines, amines, alkenes, diamines, etc. have been examined. In all cases the coordinated neutral acetylacetone is displaced. When monodentate ligands, L, are employed, products are of the type Pt(0,0-MeCOCHCOMe)XL.
